School and Community Information

Attached are two PowerPoint presentations created that identify the demographics of both the surrounding community and the school that I did my student teaching at.  Being aware of the community facilities and resources available to the students, as well as the social background of the community can provide insight into the activities of the students outside of school, as well as the issues that they might be bringing to school with them.  Being aware of the specific school demographics as well provides cultural awareness of the students, and can provide insight into how to effectively engage students and create relevant lessons, as well as being aware of potential issues that they might bring into the classroom.

Community Inquiry

The school that I student taught at is located in the small town of Bothell, which is a suburb of Seattle.  The community originated as a logging community reached by water until a road was built that connected it to Seattle.  The average family income is $75,000, with the majority of families owning thier own homes.  It is a predominantly white community.

School Inquiry

The junior high that I student taught at has the core values of Excellence, Respect, Repsonsibility, and Community.  It had a new administration, and new remodels a few years prior to my beginning there.  There are a little under 800 student, with 35% being in the free and reduced lunch program.  80% of the staff has high level degrees, and there are a wide variety of technology and resources available to the students.  Similar to the community, the student population is predominantly white.
